Pas de Deux Emerging from the ground Arms, torso, wings All in tension. Delicate volumes, Folds and caves. Opening up, Rising up, in triumph in harmony. *** In Denmark, Aquilegia blooms every spring, covering meadows of delicate, intricated, 3-dimensional flowers. The flowers of the Aquilegia hang on their thin stems as if they were kites pushed by the air current. The form of the Aquilegia is the crossroads of evolution: The dinosaur, The dragon, And the heron birds Meet in the wrinkled wings of the Aquilegia flower. Here you can follow the process of my painting, starting from the picture I took of the flowers I gathered from my garden. The original sketch is from my journal The form of a flower.
In this piece I am trying to capture the dynamic and anthro/zoomorphic forms emerging from the aquilegia flower as if it was a tridimensional Rorshach image. The first feature that captured my imagination were the two tiny wrinkled limbs emerging on the back plane of the flower, which reminded me of the famous scene from Bejart's famous ballet Le Sacre du Printempts where a male and a female danser are lifted by the corps de ballet dancers, bending backwords in a gesture of total, mutual sacrifice. Le Sacre is a primitive dance, about ancestral livelihood, a livelihood embodied in every living beings in their struggle for life, shaped by their DNA and the force of physics acting on their organisms. This spring ended up being busier than I expected on the art front and I am happy about it :) After the workshop at Havnekulturfestival, I got invited to exhibit 3 works together with other 7 artists at the Nordfyns Billedskole - North Fyn Art school in Otterup, a village located north of Odense, you can find more info visiting the website of the school: http://www.nordfyns-billedskole.dk/aktuelle-arrangementer1 This is the invitation to the exhibition that I have received from the organiser, with our names and a glimpse of our art. On the top-right corner you can see the image of my withering elephant-azalea flower. I guess the organizer found my elephant intriguing and used it for their poster and it makes me flattered. I have to exhibit 3 pieces, this means that I have to find two other paintings, I will not reveal them until the start of the exhibition: 1. I do not know yet which one I am going to show ;) 2. Not to spoil the surprise for those who might attend, I hope to see some known faces ;) In the meanwhile, we are almost in June. Azalea, lilac, roses and tulips are all blooming, it is time I go back to the Japanese Gardens a magical place full of inspiration. My artjournal The Form of a Flower is developing as a meditative evening practice, to end on a poetic note, I post here the sketches of pearl hyacinth and aquilegia. Pearl hyacinth - Muscari Deep black mouths Dark holes A quiet choir in a strenuous effort Aquilegia Grape of flowers Long neck birds Tubular faces Swan song Thank you for stopping by
xxx Bertie The time has arrived :) Tomorrow from 11 to 15:00, I will hold my first painting workshop at Odense Harbor for the Harbor festival, in Danish Havnekultur Festival. I will collaborate with three other women, local artists, we will be in a series of containers that the municipality makes available to local artists in the old harbor, which was an industrial harbor. The containers are of course decorated with graffiti art, beside a parkour area, where my daughter used to go when she did parkour, so all together the feeling is of a urban edgy/art environment. Here you can see a few images from the area and the container where we will hold our workshop. I hope to see some nice people and kids hanging out with us Thank you for stopping by :) xxx Bertie Welcome ;)
What a shame, I have been absent from my blog for one month (puzzled face) 0_0 A lot has happened in this month. In my job I have finished my teaching, published a series of articles and joined a new research group. In my art:
I am still not sure in which category I belong to, if amateur or professionals, but after all who cares? ;) If I think about the way I started with my research, it probably started in a similar way, as while I was still studying I started publishing a few articles with the magazine InStoria, a journal article about my thesis in archaeology, and a few research articles with my husband, where I was already moving towards design and learning games. In a way I started research as an amateur and slowly, here I am. Painting is moving on a similar track, slowly I am illustrating, exhibiting and selling. Maybe this is my way of doing things with my own tempo, sliding within a spectrum, from beginner to amateur, and one day hopefully to professional. As my grandma used to say, let's see... Anyway next Saturday I am going to hold a painting workshop at the Havnekultur Festival and it is going to be very interesting. At the same time, I am keeping my experiments with painting lost cities from dead trees. Here is my last experiment and I call it: Lost Fortress. I have painted it on Sennelier cold pressed paper and my new Daniel Smith's palette. The motive is inspired by this picture, that I have taken in Odense at the Skovsøen - Woods Lake area, which is populated by some gorgeous trees. I should do a series only about that little area of Odense, with its lake and the river, trees, bushes and wild life. Here are a couple of pictures earlier in the process. Thank you for stopping by :)
